Self Examination
Mark Sibley Jones

An ancient Christian practice of self examination was known as the Examen of Conscience. In this exercise, a person spends time or a regular basis in a prayerful questioning of one's motives and intentions. The goal is a pure heart.

A version of this self examination became known as the Examen of Consciousness. More than a thorough soul-searching for hidden sin, the Examen of Consciousness is an exercise in self awareness. There is more to the spiritual life, after all, than recognizing one's sinful bent. What of your longings, desires, fears, hopes, dreams, aspirations? In what ways do these reflect the Spirit's stirrings in you? In what ways may these feelings represent the creative passion of God instilled within your nature and personality?

Any wise sojourner in the spiritual landscape knows better than to just look for danger. It is just as important to discover the beauties and resources that exist within ourselves. It is a good thing to reckon with anything that obscures the light of God in our lives; it is even more important to celebrate that God's light is shining in our souls!

God, give us greater consciousness of your presence in our world. Amen.
